The thesaurus groups words according to ideas (or themes) which act as heading of groups which in turn include more specific groupings becoming increasingly specific. In this way the user can move from a general concept to a very specific one which expresses exactly what he wishes to say.
The main objective of the thesaurus is to: provide, display, suggest, help to find the word which adequately expresses the concept which one has in mind and wishes to convey.
For this reason, the organization of the vocabulary cannot be alphabetical which would lead us from the form of the word to its meaning, but rather by a procedure which permits the user to do the opposite: to go from from the meaning to the word.
In this way, the thesaurus opens up new possibilities for the user, provides the user with new forms of expression. It contributes to the enrichment of vocabulary to a far greater extent than a normal dictionary, as it allows us to fill gaps in our vocabulary, discover relationships between words, appreciate differences between them, to use them more accurately and, in short, to improve both the size and the quality of our vocabulary. |
